First Week: "Untying the Cords of the Yoke"

Question of the Week.

Why do you think Isaiah readily responded to the call?

"I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple... (with the Seraphim crying,)

'Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.'

The foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. "

Isaiah sees himself against this backdrop and cries out

"Woe is me, for I am ruined!"

In the midst of this splendor, in the midst of the glory of God, in the midst of the Seraphim expressing worship, Isaiah sees his makeup.

Isaiah becomes acutely aware of his uncleanliness before a holy God.

After receiving cleansing of his iniquity and sin being forgiven, then the voice of the Lord speaks...

"Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?"

"Here am I. Send me!" is Isaiah's response. Here am I, send me.

Uzziah the king has died, Isaiah sees the King of kings high and lifted up, he cries out in his awareness of his uncleanliness, his iniquity is taken away and his sins are forgiven... then he responds to the call with "Here am I, send me!"

Do we see our exalted Lord or are we blinded by ourselves?

Do we sense our unworthiness and sin or do we hide in self-righteousness?

Do we cry out to Him or are we too proud?

Do we recognize we are forgiven or do we wallow?

Do we respond to his call on our lives with "Here am I, send me?" no matter what the cost...
Are we ready to be sent?
Are we willing to respond to Him?

Here am I, Lord,

Here am I.

Welcome Ladies!

We are getting reading to begin a new series called
"Breaking Free" with Beth Moore.
We have 2 women's Bible studies available beginning
Saturday, October 9th
and Monday, October 11th.

Beth Moore introduces "Breaking Free" as follows,
"I once believed only the spiritually lost were captives.
God pried open my comfortably closed mind from the
inside out with my life as the object lesson. I had no
idea I was in captivity until God began to set me free."

The following statement will be our definition of
captivity throughout our study: A Christian is held
captive by anything that hinders the abundant and
effective Spirit-filled life God planned for her.
Our themes will come from Isaiah, a book about
the captivity of God’s children, the faithfulness of God,
and the road to freedom. Week 1 will overview the
Book of Isaiah through the lives of the kings who ruled
during the prophet’s ministry. These kings exemplify
many of the obstacles to freedom with which we must
deal. Then beginning with week two we will seek to
apply the formula for freedom to our lives. "

Looking Back - Anticipating Ahead, by Christine Schneider

Dear Sisters in Christ,

Well, we have finished the book of James, and we have discovered what
an authentic Christian
looks like in many common situations and difficulties. We'd like to look that way. And we are attracted by the idea of developing into a group of Christians who love one another and care for each other, even to the point of risking the friendship in favor of God's truth. It's been a wonderful journey, and I praise God for each of you who have touched my life and the lives of others in the two studies. We don't want to stop now.

Most of you already know the following information, but I didn't want to leave anyone out, so please be patient with me.

You probably have heard - or you came to Janie's for the lovely brunch - that we will be continuing (but tweaking) the Bible studies for the summer. We will again be offering two, but the Saturday one will be discontinued for the summer to free up part of your weekend.

Monday evenings every other week,

A Nature Like Elijah! James 5:12-20

Look at Elijah in James 5:16-18
¹⁶Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. ¹⁷Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. ¹⁸Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

What a powerful example of a man who walked with God and yet had a nature like ours.
This encourages people... Wow look at how awesome Elijah was and all the wonderful things he did and yet he still had a nature like ours. What is the alternative? Perfection. Well, we know that "no one is righteous, no not one." So, I think the emphasis here is not on the fact that "he is just like one of us" as a means to relieve us of some responsibility in godly living, but rather that he was the godly man he was in spite of the fact "that he is just like us." The emphasis isn't to somehow relieve us that we don't have to live up to some crazy characteristics of godliness, but rather that by the power of God in our lives that is exactly what we should be like... totally surrendered to an awesome God, no matter what the cost.

Are we people who:

speak his word regardless of the fact that our life might be on the line,
never bow the knee to any other God despite the fact that those around us demand we serve anyone other than God,
trust that God's word is true,
proclaim God's message knowing that the person of Jesus Christ is complete faithfulness,
place our complete confidence in our Almighty God.

Dare we to walk in complete surrender to God. Do we dare to risk all to be his disciples? I say there is no other alternative if we are to live at all!

I am challenged by Elijah not relieved. His nature is the same as mine. I have no excuse that can hold any weight. His nature and mine are the same. Are we willing to go out on a limb to be just as radically sold out to Jesus no matter the cost exactly as he calls us to be or do we want to play the game of Christianity thinking that somehow Elijah was just given a little more of God than us, a little better of a nature than mine... But no, let us bend our knees to our awesome God with whom there is absolutely none to compare!

Enduring James 5:7-8 and Rev 2-3

Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. ⁸You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.

Be patient in suffering. Until when? Until the Lord's coming

Be patient and stand firm. Why? Because the Lord's coming is near.

The valuable crop to wait for is the coming of the Lord!

What perspective do we have on life's "sufferings" which can hardly be categorized as sufferings.

Is our perspective to be patient in view of eternity?

Look at eternity for those who endure from Rev 2-3

To Those Who Overcome

I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.
I will give some of the hidden manna.
I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it,
known only to him who receives it.
I will give authority over the nations
I will also give him the morning star.
He will be dressed in white.
I will never blot out his name from the book of life,
but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.

I will make a pillar in the temple of my God.
Never again will he leave it.
I will write on him the name of my God
I will write on him the name of the city of my God,
I will also write on him my new name.
I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,

WOW!

Fights, Quarrels

Hidden Motives

"Change him/her Lord, so my life is easier."

"I don't want to live there."

"I want their stuff."

vs 3 "You ask and do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures."

Who is on the throne of our life?
vs4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God?
(This friendship involves wanting things so badly we would resort to our own means to try to get whatever it is -vs 2) This "friendship" is hostility toward God.

And this is why
vs5 Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"?

Something else takes highest priority within us over the Spirit of God.

We are dethroning him to attempt to satisfy our own desires.

We are being as adulteresses who go after another spouse when they have their own.

See Israelite nation's false worship.

Their hearts were set on something else.

Idolatry.

Their trust was displaced.

God did not have the throne.

We fight and quarrel with each other.

We strive to get what we want by our own means.

We piously ask God to grant our wishes so that we can stoke the fire of our passions that are waging war in our souls.
WAR.

We do not receive.

Our children pine for something, being devious, and selfishly taking it from their siblings.

Would we lovingly grant their request?

We love them.

We would rather they not have and instead have the opportunity to change their selfish behavior.

Would I expect less from God, who gives to all perfectly?

What motives drive the struggles we have? Do we infinitely trust the one who is working all things for the good of us who love him and are called according to his purpose? Our hearts are desperately wicked above all things, beyond cure... (Jeramiah 17:9)

We must surrender.
We must seek Him.

vs6 but he give a greater grace. Therefore it says, "God is apposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

He yearns for us. He pursues us. He brings us to the pigsty (as Alistair Begg says) so that we will cry out to him and return to him. Great grace. He does not abandon us when we fail and quarrel and fight and these passions wage war within us and we fall. He gives a greater grace. Praise God.

vs7-10 How can these motives be changed?

Changed Allegiance and Repentance.

Submit to God,

Resist the devil,

Draw near to God,

Cleanse your hands,

purify your hearts,

Be miserable and mourn and weep,

Turn laughter to mourning, joy to gloom

Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord

(which assumes you are entering the presence of the Lord)

Have we mourned over your selfish motives? This is what he desires.
Or did we mourn because we didn't get what we wanted?

Humility. Repentance. Surrender.

James 3:13

I guess this begs the question...

Do we want to be wise and understanding?

Why should we show it?

Is this so we can somehow receive the praise from those around us for this good life we are leading?

If so, would that truly be deeds done in humility?

Deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom...

Where does humility come from? Wisdom

Where does wisdom come from? Heaven

So, what does wisdom from heaven look like?

^{James 3:17}But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. ¹⁸Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Deeds done that are first of all pure...

How often are deeds tainted by false motives, by personal agenda, or by seeking for man's praise?

Then peace-loving, considerate,

How do I show peace-loving deeds to those closest to me, to acquaintances, to enemies?

submissive,

Does true submission always requires humility?

full of mercy, impartial and sincere

Wisdom shows mercy to it's fullest, impartially and sincerely.

Look at Jesus:

Philippians 2:5-8

⁵Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
⁶Who, being in very natureGod,
      did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
⁷but made himself nothing,
      taking the very nature of a servant,
      being made in human likeness.
⁸And being found in appearance as a man,
      he humbled himself
      and became obedient to death—
         even death on a cross! (NIV)

Were his deeds pure? the purest - in him was no sin

Peace-loving? offered peace to all mankind -

Considerate? looked out for our interests

Submissive? deepest submission to the Father

Full of Mercy? those who are his are no longer under God's wrath

Good Fruit? you and me

Impartial and Sincere? the last drop of love poured out to the end for any who would accept the gift

Did He raise a harvest of righteousness? millions have come to him clothed in his righteousness.

Jesus: The Perfect Picture of Wisdom

James 3:1-12

The Tongue

a restless evil,

a deadly poison,

a world of unrighteousness,

staining the whole body,

setting on fire the entire course of our life,

set on fire by hell,

no human can tame,

hypocritical,

Who is wise?

Who has understanding?

Well, by this, it surely isn't our tongues!

What can a tongue bought with the blood of Jesus do?

from earlier in James

count it joy when face trials,

ask God for wisdom,

boast in our low or high position of wealth,

slow to speak,

visit orphans and widows in their affliction,

show no partiality even in speech,

speak as one under the law of liberty,

offer mercy to others,

teach and live what we teach,

from our look at Proverbs

bring healing,

preserve life,

turn away wrath,

make knowledge acceptable,

bring sweetness to soul,

offer beautiful timely spoken words,

teach kindness,

call out for insight,

acknowledge God in all our ways,

be a fountain of life,

A regenerate heart,
that seeks for wisdom,
can,
by the power of the power of the Holy Spirit,

because we are being made into his very image,

make the mouth controlled with what is fitting for a child of

The King!

Let us allow the pressure (like the bit or the rudder)

of honest, consistent time

in God's precious word (the author of wisdom)

to tame our tongues to bring honor and glory to

Our King!

There is great hope!
